State is everything the next moment depends on
A live number is a pregame number that has been told what happened.
Game state is the compact description of "where are we": score, time remaining, and the sport-specific situation that shapes what happens next. Two games tied 3–3 are in very different states if one has the bases loaded with nobody out.
| Sport | State that matters most | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| MLB | Inning, outs, runners on base (base-out state), count, pitcher | Run expectancy changes sharply with outs and runners |
| NFL | Score, clock, possession, down, distance, field position, timeouts | Down and distance change the value of a possession |
| NBA / WNBA | Score, clock, possession, fouls, lineups on court | Possession-by-possession scoring; late-game fouling |
| NHL | Score, period, clock, strength (5v5, power play), empty net | Strength changes scoring rates dramatically |
| UFC / Boxing | Round, time, scheduled rounds, cards so far, damage | A fight’s remaining length depends on the schedule and the finish risk |
Where you see state on PropBetEdge
Every live surface on the network is built around state first: MLB PBEcast leads with the scoreboard, base-out diamond, live pitch and the batter–pitcher matchup; the NFL PBEcast Game Center leads with score, clock, possession and down-and-distance. See PBEcast & live casts for how to read them.
Live state is only as current as its feed. Every live product has some delay between the field and the screen, so a live number describes the state it last received, not necessarily this instant.
